Chapters 11-12: The Lightbulb

If you aren’t hooked on the book yet, wait until the next two chapters. I really like the question today because it has to do with teaching and learning. Remember that we have a much larger audience than just our school. Keep this in mind as you write your answer.

Here is your question for chapters 11-12.On page 118 Billy tells about a miracle that helps him save his dogs. He describes it as, “then like a blinding red flash the message of the lantern bored its way into my brain. In teaching we call this the “ah ha” effect, or seeing the light bulb come on. Has this ever happened to you? Describe the situation and how it felt to you. Use vivid details in your description.

Have I been in a situation like this before, yes I have been in a situation like this before? When my mom and my brother and I was driving in the mountains and it was so foggy my mom was going to almost stop in the middle of the highway so I told her to drive very slow but she decided to follow a car lights out of the mountains. I felt very scared.

Sometimes the “ah-ha” effect happens to me. One time, I was trying to solve a really hard math problem. I didn’t get it at all. I was stuck on it for awhile until I asked the teacher to help me. She helped me, and soon I understood the math problem! It felt really good, and it almost felt like acing a really hard test. Also, in pointe (for you people that don’t know what pointe is, it’s the toe shoes that dancers wear) I couldn’t get something until the teacher explained it. Now I know how to do it, and it feels a lot better than not knowing how to do it! That is how I feel when I experience the “ah-ha” effect!

I have had that moment where the light bulb comes on. I think everybody has had that moment. I have had that moment a lot of times like that. I have had them pretty much at school. The simplest things that I don’t get all of a sudden a light bulb clicks and I get it. One time I was trying to get in the creek with my friends and I did not know a way to get in. All of a sudden click there goes the light bulb and I figured I could just slide in there. -Marressa

Has something like that ever happened to me… well yes something has happened it was when I was living in Iowa I was flying a kite or at least trying to and it got stuck in a giant oak tree. It was not I could get that would help but it was no use I couldn’t reach it. Right when I was on the verge of quitting it popped into my brain like a flash of lightning in order to get the kite I had to climb the tree. So I started up I got to the kite and then grabbed the kite and since I did not want to waste the time climbing back down I just jumped and the I started to fly the kite some more.

A time that the light bulb came on in my head was when I was at my old school and I got my self stuck in the round monkey bar handles and the teacher wasn’t outside yet, so I had to get my friends to help but they couldn’t so I started to think then I had an idea. My idea was to squirm like a worm to get my self out of those round monkey bars and they went in a circle.

Yes, a some what light bulb has clicked on me before. The situation was that I couldn’t figure out what to do when I was bored, then it hit me I should either go down to the creek and play down there or I should go over to my friend Jared’s house and jump on his trampling and do tricks on there, or I could stay with plan one and be bored to death all day.

05 – 05 – 08
I was going to my first swimming camp, and I didn’t know much about swimming. So I stared on the shallow end and I was doing well. Then my counselor said it was time for the diving board. Now this camp was for a week. Only from 8am to 5pm every day for a week. My counselor was nice but very impatient. So, I got to the top of the diving board and looked down. Looking down was the saddest mistake I could make. I looked down and almost “fell” off the diving board “backwards”, when I tried to run away! It made me feel sea-sick. But my counselor decided to THROW me in. He likes doing that to little kids that run. I fell. At first when I hit the water, belly first, it hurt. I don’t mean the paper cut hurt I mean it HURT. I started going down. I held my breath and pushed and pushed up. But I wasn’t strong enough. Then, I had an idea. As fast as I fell I had a split second idea in my mind. I couldn’t swim up. But I can swim sideways. So I swam to the side of the pool. Then with all my strength I kicked up! I practically flew out of the water like a flying fish. But the good feeling didn’t last that long. I was falling. I tried to grab the edge and just barley grabbed it. Then I pulled myself out. The funny part is that when I got out I expected to be laughed at for partly drowning. But instead everyone cheered and my friend said that I did a back flip when I shot up. I didn’t know if I did or not. But that was so fun. I wanted to go again. Heh.

I think that was the funniest idea I had in swimming.

I have felt this and I know how Billy’s felt when an idea just pops in your mined. All you feel is it building up then it hits you its like in that split second you get it.

Yes it has happened to me. It was actually on Easter when my aunt was giving hints to where my eggs were(we have 3 eggs that have our name on them) I spent hours looking for the egg then got the hints(the hints were “where do chickens roost” and “what do fires burn”) it meant look in the chicken house near the wood pile but I thought it meant in the big tree where Wayne used to hide chickens and silverware when he was mad. Don’t worry he fed the chickens.

Yes something like that happened to me once it was the third grade and was working on a song for my school talent show I had it all down but there was this one part that was so hard to find lyrics. I tried for days and the talent show try-outs whereon Monday (the day I was still working on it was Sunday).I didn’t know what to do so I prayed. I prayed and asked if god could help me write the end of my song. When I got done praying it came to me I had the perfect Idea for the end of the song. I wrote it down, thanked god, and went to bed and the next day I got into the talent show and when the talent show came, I did awesome.

Yes it has one time when I was in the art room our art teacher was doing flashcards and we were on certain teams and it was one of the other team’s questions the question was What was the 50th state to join the United States of America. I knew that my dad told me that answer before. One of the people guest Alaska. “No, other teams question.” He said then like a bullet it came to me. I suddenly felt a rush of excitement and my blood was pumping. I shot my hand in the air has if it were to fly out of my socket. The teacher called on me “Hawaii,” I said in a proud voice “correct,” he said and I was proud of my self.

: Yes this has. One time I wanted to make some thing to ride on to go down a big hill. It hit me. I would take my old bike and take off the back wheel and stick two wheels on the back off of a big wheel thing for little kids. It worked until the wheels fell off and then I thought I’ll bend the back metal piece around the bar that connects the wheels and it worked and I still have the thing today. Ifelt good after that because I actually made something that was fun.

It had happened to me before, I was four and I was at the pool when it was time to go my dad told me to go get my brother in the other pool and when I yelled his name I slipped and my flip flop fell into the pool and I couldn’t just go in and get to get it because didn’t know how to swim in the bug kid pool and so I just sat there and stared at the flip flop, after awhile I had a idea that I was going to get the leaf net and pick up my shoe but then I thought that I was going to get in trouble but then I looked up at the life guard and there was no one there so I went to go get the net when all of the sudden a person walked up to me and said “hey is this your shoe?” I said “Thanks.” And I went home with two flip flops.-Hope*

Yes it has happened to me before. The thing that happened to me was my dad was trying to teach smoothing to me and I did not under stand it at all. Then I asked him if he could explain it to me again and he said yes. So he started to explain it again then the light bulb clicked on again. Then I went and tough tot to other people and I felt good for teaching other people how to do it. I also felt good because I learned smoothing new.

Yes this has happened to me. It happened to me when my brother and I were out in the woods. What happened was, my brother was trying to hop across a frozen creek and his foot got stuck in a couple of tangled branches hanging over the thin layer of ice on the creek. He tried to pull his foot out but it was stuck. Every time he moved, he would slip closer to the frozen creek. I saw what happened and noticed that his shoe was the thing that was keeping him from getting out. So, I picked up a fallen tree branch and threw it at the ice to see how thick it was. It wasn’t thick at all, which meant I couldn’t rest my weight on it. Then I carefully reached for my brother’s shoe and pulled it off. He then slipped out of the branches and helped me up.

Yes it has happened to me before. I was in the middle of playing kickball with my two friends Justin and Kyle. We were going over the rules and Justin told a rule and I had the rule on the top of my head until Justin told the rule and the rule I had left me. But right before we started to play kickball the rule came back to me and the rule was, “If you shoe falls off you are not out.” That was my rule and everyone that was playing kickball was okay with it. But then in the game my shoe fell off when I kicked and Justin said “You’re out!” and I said “The rule was if your shoe falls off you’re not out.”

Question 1: I agree with Billy, because a miracle can really happen. I mean if Billy said that the big tree was the only tree that the wind was blowing on then that was just weird “Do you think that god heard my prayer?” Something happened when my family and I were sleeping, the smoke detectors went off at night, and it was strange, because there was no smoke. The next day, we got the most painful news, my grandpa had passed away.

I can’t quit remember if this has ever happened to me, maybe when I went hunting and I or my dad didn’t know what tree to put the tree stand on. But we decided to put it on a wide and tall tree, so we were able to get a deer.

One time while I was working on my KMH morning announcements I forgot how to do a green screen affect I was freaking out. I didn’t think I missed any thing so while I was doing this at recesses I was in the room with no one who knew how to do it. I sat there for about fifteen minutes trying to figure out what I did wrong. And then finally at then very end of recesses I remembered what step I for got. I felt so stupid then.
